Tour of the Magical World of Madrid's Christmas Lights
The arrival of Christmas transforms the city of Madrid into a spectacle of lights and colors that adorns its streets, squares and buildings.
From November 28, 2024 to January 6, 2025, millions of LED lamps will illuminate more than 230 locations in the city's 21 districts, all with a firm commitment to environmental sustainability.
Switching on the Christmas Lights
Madrid's Christmas lights will be switched on from November 28, 2024 at Puerta del Sol, in a special event presided over by Luis de la Fuente, the national men's soccer team coach. The switching on times will be as follows:
Sunday to Thursday: 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. (except Thursday, November 24 from 7:00 p.m.).
Fridays and Saturdays: 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
Special days: 5, 6, 7 and 8 December from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. 24 December and 5 January from 6:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. 31 December from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Illuminated locations
With more than 12 million LED bulbs, Christmas lights will cover more than 230 locations throughout the city. Among them, the installation of a large illuminated nativity scene next to the Metrópolis building, at the confluence of Gran Vía and Alcalá streets, and the large 18-metre star in Cea Bermúdez with the Plaza de Cristo Rey stand out.
New this year
One of the great novelties is the incorporation of lights designed by children from first and second grade of primary school, winners of a competition organised by the city council. In addition, the large illuminated fir tree at Puerta del Sol will have a new design, 37 metres high and with 245,000 points of light.
Participating designers
The event will feature the participation of prestigious designers associated with the Association of Fashion Creators of Spain (ACME). This year, the creations of Pedro del Hierro, Juana Martín and Ulises Mérida will be added, joining other renowned designers such as Devota & Lomba, Andrés Sardá, Teresa Helbig and many more.
The illuminated fir trees
In total, the city will be dressed with 7,100 chains of light, 121 cherry trees and a dozen large illuminated fir trees. The fir tree at Puerta del Sol stands out, which will debut an impressive design with more than 3,360 red balls and a height of almost 37 metres, becoming an iconic symbol of Christmas in Madrid.
